Math Lab
Requirements for Credit in Graded Courses (Math 200L, 201L1-201L3, 121L1-121L4,
123L1-123L4, 151L1-151L3)
Lab attendance should be a minimum of three hours per week for a 1.0-unit class, and four and a half hours for a 1.5-unit class. Students' attendance is recorded on the TimeKeeper computer in the Math Lab. Students taking a three-module or four-module sequence are strongly encouraged to complete at least two modules during the semester. To complete two modules, students should plan on a minimum of six to nine hours a week; the rule of thumb is at least three hours a week for each unit to be completed in the Math Lab during the semester.
For the summer session, the hours given above should be multiplied by 3, since the same amount of work must be done in one-third as many weeks. For example, lab attendance in the summer for a 1.0-unit class should be at least 9 hours a week, rather than 3 hours a week.
The "bottom line" is that you put in enough time during the semester to learn the material and finish the required work in the classes you need to complete.
The grades earned for these courses are A, B, C, D, or F.
For students using the ALEKS learning system (this is available for Math 121L1-121L4 and Math 123L1-123L4), the grade in each module is based on a graded assessment taken in ALEKS. To complete a module, you must complete the chapters that are indicated in the syllabus, and you must arrange a test (known in ALEKS as a "requested assessment") with your Math Lab instructor. The other assessments that ALEKS gives you don't count towards your grade, but they help you and your instructor keep track of your progress.
For students who are working from a textbook (this applies to Math 200L, Math 201L1-201L3, Math 151L1-151L3, and students in Math 121L1-121L4 and Math 123L1-123L4 who are not using ALEKS), the total grade for each module is determined as follows:
Chapter Tests: 60%
Module Test: 40%
Module Test: 40%
Credit will be awarded upon successful completion of the coursework for each module.
Once you pass a module with a grade of C or better, then you register for the next module.
Students continue this process until they finish the whole sequence for the course that they are taking in the Math Lab.
Requirements for Credit in Non-graded Courses (Math 205, Math 206)
Students must accumulate 24 or more hours of Math Lab attendance, and complete additional work as indicated in the course
syllabus, in order to receive a grade of "Credit". Otherwise, a grade of "No Credit" will be recorded. Once finals week begins,
hours in the Math Lab can no longer be accumulated for Math 205 or Math 206.
