The nearly four-hour game produced 101 points, 119 passes, two kick returns, nine touchdown passes and not much defense. But even though the Panthers managed to take a 40-34 lead early in the fourth quarter, they couldn't hang on and fell to Mendocino 55-46 in the season-opener for both teams. It was the 13th year in a row Hartnell has lost its season-opener. But few, if any, had the action of this one. Hartnell set a school record for most pass attempts in a game with 70, surpassing the previous high of 62, set two years ago. Brad Smet started for the Panthers at quarterback and completed 26 of 59 passes for 334 yards and two touchdowns. Freshman receivers Isiah Tate and Tim Smith lived up to their pre-season billing by combining for 23 catches and 344 yards. Tate had 12 catches for 178 yards and Smith had 11 for 166 The game was tied 20-20 at halftime, but Mendocino returned the second half kickoff 86 yards to take the lead. However, Hartnell battled back to take the lead behind the running of Ricky Rodwell. The freshman from Baltimore scored three touchdowns in the second half on short-yardage runs. He finished with 121 yards, the most by a Hartnell running back in nearly three years. A one-yard run by Rodwell early in the fourth quarter put Hartnell up 40-34. But it didn't last long. Mendocino returned the ensuing kickoff 80 yards for a score to re-capture the lead, 41-40. It scored again two minutes later. Hartnell's final touchdown came with 52 seconds to play on Smet's second touchdown pass of the game. Hartnell's Kiero Small, a freshman defensive lineman from Baltimore, had eight tackles four for losses including a sack ' and four assists.
