Gary Shaw has been a physical education instructor and coach at Hartnell College since the fall of 1969 (34 years). For the first 20 years, he was an assistant football and head track & field coach. Since 1989, he has been the head cross country coach and continued as the head track & field coach. Gary has also been the head women's track & field coach since 1979 (24 years).
Gary has had 65 track/cross-country athletes earn full-ride athletic scholarships. In 1996 and 2000, he worked his magic at the world class level, training former Hartnell sprinter Alvin Harrison, who went on to earn gold medals at both Olympics in the relay.
Gary attributes his success to being supported by six areas of greatness: many great assistant coaches, tri-county athletes, parents, athletic directors, secretarial/support staff, and most importantly his wife Susie Shaw. Gary has been a Coast Conference representative since 1970. He has coached a sport every semester since 1966. Gary believes that he has had the best job of all - he has been in the business of assisting student-athletes to help create great memories. Gary truly believes he has worked for forty years, but yet never had a real job.
An icon among college track coaches across the state, Shaw left the legacy, having guided the Hartnell men's track team to 29 Coast Conference titles and 14 for the women, 3 NOR-CAL men's titles, and 1 for the women's team, and a record of 324-16 (95.3%) for dual meet wins. In cross-country Gary brought home 9 Coast Conference championships and 7 women's championships. Gary also adds 4 men's and 3 women's NOR-CAL cross-country championships.
Even in all of Coach Shaw's success, he managed to attract the world's best throwers to Hartnell College. In 1979, Coach Shaw started an annual "Throwers Only" meet which draws great attention from discus throwers all over the world because of the ideal throwing conditions that includes the wonderful breeze that sweeps across Salinas nearly everyday just after noon.
Throwers will now compete in the Discus and Shot Put in what will be known forever as the annual "The Gary Shaw Big Throwers Classic".
