Hartnell College is taking part in a state-wide initiative to improve the teaching of basic skills. To that end, a Basic Skills Initiative Task Force has met throughout the year to develop an Action Plan for next year.
Please read the Action Plan and offer us your comments through the blog. This is so important to the college and our students that we need everyone's best thoughts and ideas. The committee will begin meeting again in the Fall. Please let me know if you would like to be a part of that committee.

The Basic Skills Initiative was organized through the statewide Academic Senate, the RP group, the Center for Student Success, and the Chancellor's Office. The Hartnell College Basic Skills Initiative Task Force has created an Action Plan based on its research, which includes literature review, review of best practices, and self-assessment. Our planning and assessment will involve these four main areas:
- A--Organizational and Administrative Practices
- B-- Program Components
- C--Staff Development
- D-- Instructional Practices.
Included in this section of the blog are:
- Action Plan
- Planning_Matrix_A_D
- BSI_Self-Assessment Tool3
- Literature Review (RP Basic Skills 2007v2f)
- Research Folder
Please be aware that there is a Title V grant that will meet some of the English and ESL goals assessed.
Hartnell College is currently in its third year of a project funded by a Lumina grant. In collaboration with CSUMB and Cabrillo College developmental math and English faculty have been focusing on student engagement and teaching habits of mind within the classroom in order to improve student success, retention, and transfer.
