Welcome to the Internet Literacy web site!

This course provides an overview of the wealth of information available through the Internet. Throughout the semester, you will have an opportunity to explore tools and techniques for effective web searching, explore web-based multimedia, participate in collaborative projects, create your own web pages, and use the Internet to perform your own research. About Online Instruction

Are you unfamiliar with online learning and web-based instruction? Not every student finds online learning suitable. Some of the variables that affect your success as an online learner include the following:

All lectures and assignments for this class are available online through E-college. You may use computers in the new library electronic commons during open hours or computers in the Information Competency Center during drop in tutorial sessions, or your home computer and home Internet access to participate in the class. If you are using your home computer, be sure it meets these technical requirements.

Orientation

An online orientation to the class may be found at http://www.hartnell.edu/library/interlit/orientation.htm or you may contact me at 759-6063 or by e-mail, jfellguth@hartnell.edu for an in-person introduction to the class. An optional in-person orientation will also be held in the Information Competency Center on the second floor of the Hartnell Library. Check the class schedule for the date and time. You are not required to attend this session.

You are encouraged to find a "study buddy" to work collaboratively on class assignments throughout the semester. In addition, the online research assignments for the class may be used to  conduct research for assignments in other classes. This allows you to select one topic, find information, present the information and submit the same work for credit in both classes.

What Skills Should I Have to Start This Class?

Computer Word-processing E-mail Internet
You should understand your computer type (PC or Macintosh), be able to create, save, organize, and retrieve files and folders, name and rename files and folders, locate programs and files, open and close folders and files.

You should be able to start and operate a current word-processing program such as Microsoft Word or Wordperfect, create and format paragraphs and documents, names and save documents as files, save files in different formats such as .rtf, .doc, and .txt.

You must have your own e-mail account and should be able to send and receive e-mail messages using your own personal e-mail account or your school e-mail account, create and organize an electronic address book, attach files to e-mail and open e-mail attachments. You should be able to establish a dial-up or Network enabled Internet connection, start up a browser program such as Internet Explorer or Firefox, type in web addresses to navigate to specific websites, move backward and forward to visited sites, use links, scroll bars, bookmarks and refresh tools, create and organize bookmarks.

Acrobat Reader Free on the Internet at http://www.adobe.com/. Scroll to the bottom of the page, click on the button to download free Adobe Acrobat Reader. View, print, and move around in PDF files that appear similar to the printed version complete with page layout and graphics.

Firefox Free on the Internet at http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/ Web browser software
Shockwave Flash Player Free on the Internet at http://www.macromedia.com/. See "Downloads". Allows user to view and hear online multimedia created with Flash software.
Windows Media Player Free on the Internet at www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/players.aspx. Be sure to pick the version compatible with your operating system. Allows user to view and hear online audio and video.
Quicktime Free on the Internet at http://www.apple.com/quicktime/. Plug-in that permits web browsers to display animation, play music and video.
Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Powerpoint) Your school bookstore, computer softwares stores, or online e-stores. There is a cost. Hartnell students may purchase discounted copies of Microsoft Office, http://www.collegebuys.org/ A collection of software packages that contain word-processing, spreadsheet, graphing and presentation applications. Highly recommended. Also available on school computer lab workstations.
