As a Hartnell student you have taken on a big responsibility. This can often be overwhelming, especially when combined with the stress of everyday life. Friends and family can be supportive, but that's not always enough. 


Depression and Suicide
Suicide is a major threat to young adults. There may be a number of reasons why an individual comes to feel depressed and hopeless. These issues may include:

  • Breaking up of a marriage or close relationship with a loved one
  • Difficulties in interpersonal relation- ships with family or close friends
  • Worry about grades or failure in life
  • Concerns over physical appearance and personal attractiveness
  • Loss of "support systems"
  • Pessimistic feelings about the future and achieving one's goals
  • The compounding and disorienting effects of drugs and/or alcohol
  • Just feeling lonely, isolated or abandoned

Although you may not be feeling suicidal, you may feel a persistent sadness, anxiousness or emptiness due to loss or other factors related to depression or grief.


Traumatic Issues


There are a number of issues that can be extremely traumatic and precipitate an emotional crisis at any time during your life. These issues include:

  • Assault, rape
  • Unexpected pregnancy
  • Abuse
  • Alcohol or drug abuse
  • Eating disorders
  • Anxiety
  • Anger management
  • HIV diagnosis or other serious illness
  • Death of a family member or friend
  • Divorce or separation

 

Stress of Life


Even everyday stress can take a toll on your personal health and well-being. This is especially true when you are attempting to juggle the multiple responsibilities of school, family and work. Unfortunately your relationships with family and loved ones may suffer as a result of these multiple demands.
