LSK 105 (FA 2007):  Emotional Management

 

Course Description and Message from the Instructor:

Welcome to COU 105, “Emotional Management”!  This class is a safe place for students who are interested in learning about how to deal with difficult emotions in a constructive way.  Students will increase awareness of their own feelings and learn therapeutic strategies to improve negative moods.  Students will also learn about the various mental health resources in the community and how to access them when in crisis mode.  Through peer discussion, readings, self processing, and film, students will learn how to avoid the escalation of negative emotions, and communicate in productive ways in order to ultimately get what they want. 

 

 

Content:

This course will offer instruction on developing strategies to build and maintain emotional stability.  Resilience and Cognitive Behavioral techniques will be demonstrated and practiced.  Also a survey of the different community support groups will be explored.  Support systems include, but are not limited to Hartnell Crisis Center and the Suicide Prevention Center.

 

HOW TO PASS CLASS:

1.     Attend Class regularly

2.     Complete weekly journals

3.     Complete all assignments in class and outside of class

4.     Be open to listening and learning about Yourself

5.     Complete Pre/Post Test

About Assignments:

 

Class Attendance:  Every time you show up to class and stay the whole time you get 10 points.  Please try to be on time…It is disruptive to the class when students come late

 

Pre-Test/ Final:  The pre-test will be given on the 1st day of class.  It is worth 5 points.  The final exam, which is the same test, will be given on the last day of class.  It is also worth 5 points.  Because the purpose of this test is to determine how much you have learned during the semester, you will receive extra points, per question, when you demonstrate a learning curve.

 

Journal Writing:  Each week you will be expected to write in your online journal about current class topics and how they relate to you personally.  These topics will be provided to you online.  You will receive 5 points for each entry. 

 

You are expected to complete at least 5  of the following outside assignments in order to pass the class  (5 points for each assignment):

 

Volunteer Work (1 hour)

Counseling Session (1 hour)

Registering to Vote

Activism (1 hour)

Watch a film or Read a book and share the emotional impact with your class

Exercise (4 hours)

Meditation (1 hour)
