A note about the Hartnell College Math Lab Sadly, the Math Lab
doesn’t exist this semester. You can still get math help at the Tutorial
Center in the College Annex. Some of the courses that
used to be offered in the Math Lab will still be available. Click here for more information about those
courses. Students currently
enrolled in my courses (the “L series” math courses that used to be offered
in the Math Lab), keep reading. Information for my
students in the following classes: q Elementary Algebra – Math 121L1, 121L2, 121L3, and 121L4q Intermediate Algebra – Math 123L1, 123L2, 123L3,
and 123L4 q Pre-Algebra – Math 201L1, 201L2, and 201L3 If you’re in one of the
11 classes listed above, you will be using an Internet learning system called
ALEKS. (There’s one exception, described below.) You can find lots of
information on ALEKS at the ALEKS web site. Nobody
in those classes has to buy a book – you can do everything in the ALEKS
system. If you want to have a textbook too, your syllabus tells you which one
to use, but it’s optional. Students in the classes listed
above who have not used ALEKS before will need to buy an ALEKS access
code. You can buy one in the Hartnell College bookstore for $86.75, or you
can buy it online with a credit card for $63 (instructions here). If you have used
ALEKS before, don’t buy an access code yet, because I may be able to get
your old one renewed for free. Contact me to make that happen (my contact information is at the top of
this page). Here’s
the exception to using ALEKS in the classes listed above: If you took
one of the L1 classes listed above in the Math Lab, and if you used the
textbook instead of ALEKS in that L1 class, and if you’re now in the L2, L3,
or L4 class in the same sequence, then I’ll let you keep using the textbook
instead of ALEKS. Everybody
else must use ALEKS. I’m just letting the “book veterans” keep using the book
because it wouldn’t be fair to make them switch in the middle of the
sequence. Students using the book can switch to ALEKS at any time, but not
the other way around. Information for my
students in the following classes: q Technical Math – Math 151L1, 151L2, and 151L3q Arithmetic of Whole Numbers – Math 200L If
you’re in one of the 4 classes listed above, you will be using a textbook,
which you can find in the Hartnell bookstore (the tags on the shelves will
tell you which one you need). If you’re taking Technical Math, it’s OK to use
the 6th or 7th edition book instead of the 8th edition; just tell me which edition you're using so I can be sure to give you the right syllabus. The
book for Math 200L is a workbook that’s designed to be written in. If you buy
a used copy, look through it first to make sure someone hasn’t already
written in it. Information for
students in all of my classes: You’re enrolled in a
hybrid class, which means it’s partly face-to-face in a classroom and partly
on the Internet. You may not have taken a class like that before, but I think you’ll find it works pretty well. If you’ve taken one of
these classes in the Math Lab before, you need to know that it won’t operate the
same way this semester. Especially, you must attend class at the scheduled
times. There will be a little bit of freedom about when you take tests,
but not much. Hartnell's online portal (eCollege) contains much more information about the class you're taking. To log in, and to find
information on eCollege itself, click here. |
