LSK 126:  Study Skills

 

Message from the Instructor:

 

Welcome to COU26, “Study Skills”!  This class is designed for students with learning differences so that they can increase awareness of learning strengths and develop individualized learning strategies to succeed in college.  There will be required assignments ,which includes class involvement and personalized opportunities for growth.    Class Lectures and activities will provide basic information on how to reach academic goals.  I guarantee that students that are motivated to learn will leave this class with important tools towards becoming a thriving student. Student Learning Objectives:

 

1.      Students will determine individual learning tendencies through learning inventories

2.      Students will be proactive in accessing support from peers, college faculty, and staff

3.      Students will interview assigned campus departments in order to increase awareness of supplemental support while in college

4.      Students will utilize teamwork strategies in order to successfully complete assignments

5.      Students will practice affirmations in order to improve attitude and motivation levels

6.      Students will look at current schedule trends and create a time management plan that improve the organization of life’s priorities

7.      Students will watch demonstrations on how to improve notetaking skills

8.      Students will practice standard notetaking skills during a class lecture

9.      Students will be made aware of specific learning strategies and accommodations for students with learning disabilities

10.  Students will personalize given information in order to maximize memory skills

11.  Students will explore the different forms of assistive technology

    1. Students will evaluate their personal level of stress and list stress reduction techniques
    2. Students will identify recommended study skills when preparing for a test
    3. Students will tour the library and use library resources to access information

15.   Students will utilize the Library’s resources to complete given research

HOW TO PASS CLASS (Student Responsibilities):

 


1.      Attend Class (Students will receive points for attending classes)

 

2.      Complete Assignments

(Students will receive points for completing assignments)

 

3.      Participate in all Class Activities

(Students will receive points for participating activities)

 

4.      Take Pre/Post Test 

(Students will receive points for completing the Pre & Post Test)

 

  1. Show growth on Post Test

 

  1. Be open to learning about yourself

 

  1. Use all opportunities to learn about yourself

 

  1. Show Respect for all peers in the class

 

9.  Communicate any challenges that you are having in class with

GRADING

This is a Credit/ No Credit Class.  Students need at least 75% of total points given to get credit for this class. 

 

 

 

 

EXTRA CREDIT

Absences/ Assignments can be made up in the following ways (up to 5 times):

 

1)       Receive an A, B, or C on an assignment in another class.  Write up a paragraph on which study skills you used or present it in front of the class

 

2)       Volunteer 3 hours of time (Need note from agency confirming volunteer work)

 

3)       Meet with instructor from another class to discuss personal learning needs or access outside help (Need note from instructor)

 

4)       Utilize Assistive Technology for another class (Need verification from Librarians or DSP&S staff

 

5)       Utilize Tutorial Center (Need verification from Tutorial Staff)

 

6)       Other options?……Discuss with instructor
