Astronomy 1L Field Trip Status:
The
Field Trip is Cancelled!!!
It’s
overcast, cloudy, and looks like it will rain tonight = bad observing
conditions…so unfortunately the Astronomy field trip will NOT occur at Fremont
Peak Observatory.
You
have one of three options you can take:
1)
Try to attend the West Pinnacles trip on Friday, March 19th. Remember if you can also get credit for this
in the lecture class. Here is the info for it: West Pinnacles Trip
2)
Go to Fremont Peak on your own during one of the Saturday Public night events
when it is clear. Check the schedule
here. Remember if you can also get credit
for this in the lecture class: Fremont Peak
Observatory
3) If you can’t make it to the either,
do the following assignment:
You must do BOTH Essays I and II to earn full credit. Be sure to write in
essay format and cite your references.
Do not plagiarize!
I. Research on the internet
about one major observatory around the world (can refer to lecture notes for
some names of observatories).
In your summary include:
a) Where is the observatory located (city, state, or
city,
country)
b) details about the location
(e.g. what elevation it is at)
c) Why is the location a good place
to build an
observatory?
d) How many telescopes does the observatory have?
e) How large is the biggest telescope at that
observatory?
II. Research on the internet about the
Hubble Space Telescope. Be sure to write
in essay format.
In your summary, include:
a) Who
was telescope named after and what was his major
discovery?
b)
What type of telescope is it?
i) refractor or reflecting?
ii) diameter of telescope
c) When was it launched?
d) What major problem did it experience and how
was the problem was
fixed?
e)
What kind of scientific study was it used for?
f)
Why does it give us better images than telescopes
built on Earth?
