the company of strangers
She sits on the edge of the bed
biting her fingernails;
a cocktail from the bar
sweating on the nightstand;
in the adjacent room,
a loud television clouds
bitter voices;
he excused himself,
closed the bathroom door
to catch a shower;
she lingers longer than she should,
knowing he will not want to talk;
but home is too far for her now,
and the company of strangers promises
much more
than anything she might lose tonight.
