ADAPTIVE PHYSICAL EDUCATION INSTRUCTOR

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

The Adaptive Physical Education Instructor/ Specialist will instruct a variety of adapted classes in the area of physical fitness designed for the disabled as per the course descriptions, assess disabled students and conduct fitness testing to determine skills, needs and potential, establish individual education plans for each student, plan/coordinate curriculum and establish a schedule, develop a skills lab in working with cardiac rehabilitation patients for potential nursing students, utilize a variety of equipment and employ numerous teaching techniques to promote neuromuscular and cardiovascular development, develop new courses, curriculum and activities as student needs become apparent and recommend implementation according to college instructional program criteria, recruit, train and supervise student instructional aides, complete the necessary reports/records for special funding and program compliance, implement recruitment activities for Adaptive Physical Education through school contacts, marketing, and community liaison activities. The instructor will also be expected to assume the usual non-teaching duties such as serving on college committees, developing curriculum, keeping scheduled office hours, and maintaining relationships with feeder schools.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:*

  • Must be sensitive to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability and ethnic backgrounds of community college students and the community at-large.
  • A Master's in physical education, education with an emphasis in physical education, kinesiology, physiology of exercise, or adaptive physical education OR a Bachelor's in any of the above AND a Master's in any life science, dance, physiology, health education, recreation administration, or physical therapy.
  • Fifteen (15) semester units of upper division or graduate study in adapted physical education.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:*

  • Specialized training or certification in working with special populations.
  • Experience instructing, training, providing physical restoration, or therapy to individuals with physical disabilities.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Regular, full time, academic, tenure-track position beginning Spring 2003. Starting salary range: $41,680 to $57,126 per academic year based on 177 days (placement dependent upon educational background and appropriate full-time teaching and counseling experience). District-assisted health and welfare coverage for employee and dependents includes medical, dental, and vision. Life, accident, and income protection insurance premiums are available for the employee only. State Teacher's Retirement System (STRS) membership is required. The District participates in contributions to STRS. Position is contingent on renewal of annual funding.

All offers of employment are contingent upon approval by the Board of Trustees, receipt of official transcripts verifying the degree stipulated under the minimum qualifications section, employment verification, and any other pertinent documentation.

Individual selected must be fingerprinted and submit to a tuberculosis examination.
