ASSOCIATE TEACHER

Two full-time positions, and one part-time position available
Main and Alisal Campus

Classification: Classified, Temporary

Hourly Rate:

  1. $10.00 (meets minimum qualifications)
  2. $12.00 (Completion of 18 units of ECE/CD, including core courses, and six GE units)
  3. $14.00 (Qualified for or possession of a valid Child Development Teacher Permit)
Working Year: 180 days, 4 or 8 hours per day

Definition:

Under the supervision of the Program Director and/or Site Supervisor and guidance of the Teacher, works as a member of the teaching team to promote active learning in the preschool classroom by planning and implementing developmentally appropriate experiences and by creating an environment in which three to five years old children can experiment, make choices, solve problems and share their experiences with others; assists in maintaining a clean safe, and orderly physical environment.

Representative Duties:

  • Complies with Hartnell College Board Policies and Administrative Regulations, State of California Title 5 and Title 22 codes, Child Development Center policies and procedures, accreditation standards, and other applicable regulations.
  • Regularly assesses the Children's individual needs, strengths, and interests; responds quickly and directly to children's needs, desires and verbal and non-verbal messages adapting the response to the children's differing styles and abilities. Facilitates the development of self-esteem by expressing respect, acceptance, and comfort for children.
  • Plans and provides activities and experiences designed for all areas of a child's development; physical, emotional, social, and cognitive, through an integrated approach; contributes to the preparation of lesson plans and associated materials.
  • Prepares the environment for children to learn through active exploration and interaction with adults, other children, and materials; Provides materials that are concrete, real and relevant to the children's lives; Extends children's learning by asking open-ended questions and/or making suggestions that stimulate children's thinking.
  • Cares for all aspects of children's personal needs; participates in and assists with snack preparation with children; assists in maintaining a clean, orderly and safe environment; Maintains accurate records.
  • Meets regularly with teaching team and attends other program related meetings, trainings and conferences.
  • Communicates as appropriate with staff and parents and shares child development knowledge, insights and resources as part of regular communication and conferences with family members; Participates in parent conferences and parent meetings.
  • Performs other job-related tasks as assigned
Physical and Mental Characteristics:

Physical, mental and emotional stamina to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position; Manual dexterity sufficient to write, use the telephone, and operate center equipment; Vision sufficient to read printed materials and to see at a distance. Hearing sufficient to conduct in person conversations with children and adults and telephone conversations; Speaking ability in an understandable voice with sufficient volume to be heard in normal conversational distance, on the telephone, and in addressing groups; Physical agility to push/pull, squat, twist, turn, bend, stoop and to reach overhead, and run; Physical mobility sufficient to move rapidly about the work environment on varied indoor and outdoor surfaces and respond to emergency situations; Physical strength sufficient to lift forty-five (45) pounds; Physical stamina sufficient to sit in a child's chair, squat at children's eye level for prolonged periods of time and to stand and walk for prolonged periods of time; Physical, mental, and emotional tolerance to be exposed to the noise generated by children in an enclosed environment; Mental acuity to collect and interpret data, evaluate, reason, define problems, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, make valid judgment and decisions.

Required Qualifications:

  • Qualified for or possession of a valid Child Development Associate Teacher Permit.
  • At least 18 years of age.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing in the English Language.
  • Ability to work effectively with individuals of diverse educational, socio-economic, and cultural backgrounds, and those with disabilities and special needs.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain accurate records.
  • Ability to maintain a positive attitude, patience and a genuine interest in working with children.
  • Ability to lift 45 pounds.
  • Submit proof of completion of 15 hours training in preventative health practices, including pediatric cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and pediatric first aid within ninety days of employment.
