Transfer Center Counselor

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

Performs a variety of counseling/advising duties including, but not limited to, academic advisement for transfer preparation, educational planning, community resources/network development and personal counseling. The counselor will also teach transfer and career guidance courses; develop transfer workshops; assist students write resumes and/or personal statements, and coach them through the transfer process; conduct individual and/or group counseling sessions; complete informational reports as required; attend and participate in scheduled staff meetings; maintain established office hours; assist with student orientation and recruitment; serve as a liaison with assigned academic divisions, departments or special areas; administer and interpret appropriate standardized tests; and perform other duties as assigned. The position may include a combination of irregular hours and/or some evenings at peak periods such as orientation, registration, and summer session.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: *

  • Must be sensitive to and understanding of, the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability and ethnic backgrounds of community college students and the community at-large.
  • A Master's in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, or career development OR A Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT/MFCC) license OR the equivalent from an accredited institution. (Applicants applying for equivalency consideration must submit a District form for Equivalency Committee review.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:*

  • Bilingual in Spanish and English.
  • Professional counseling experience in an accredited educational institution.
  • A background in teaching and counseling culturally diverse, nontraditional students in an educational setting.
  • Experience using Internet and computer-based transfer and career guidance programs.
  • Knowledge of financial aid/scholarship resources available for students.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Regular, full time, academic, tenure-track position beginning August 12, 2004. Annual starting salary range: $42,226 to $59,983 based on 177 days (placement dependent upon educational background and appropriate full-time teaching experience). District-assisted health and welfare coverage for employee and dependents includes medical, dental, and vision. Life, accident, and income protection insurance premiums are available for the employee only. State Teacher's Retirement System (STRS) membership is required. The District participates in contributions to STRS.

All offers of employment are contingent upon approval by the Board of Trustees, receipt of official transcripts verifying the degree stipulated under the minimum qualifications section, employment verification, and any other pertinent documentation.

Individual selected must be fingerprinted and submit to a tuberculosis examination.
