DEFINITION
The Dean of Instruction for Physical Education and Athletics is the manager of all functions associated with instruction in Intercollegiate Athletics and Physical Education. Responsibility includes formulation and administration of District policy concerning the instructional and sports programs. Activities include, but are not limited to, planning, organizing, staffing, directing, and controlling budget, curriculum, staff evaluation, and scheduling of instructional programs.
To perform effectively these functions, the Dean of Instruction will exercise independent discretion and judgment, which are subject to periodic review and evaluation under the general direction of the Vice President for Instruction.
SIGNIFICANT RESPONSIBILITIES
- Formulate and administer policies and procedures in relation to respective disciplines.
- Participate on District-wide policy formulating committees.
- Interpret and administer College policy with respect to class size and course offerings, including faculty loads, teaching schedules, office hours, and room assignments.
- Participate in the formulation of collective bargaining proposals and be prepared to participate in negotiations as the Board's representative.
- Interpret and enforce collective bargaining agreements.
- Determine the schedule of classes.
- Formulate and administer annual budgets.
- Determine the direction for the organization, interpretation, revision, and development of curriculum for courses and programs.
- Identify staffing needs, create job announcements, identify recruiting sources and screen applicants.
- Select substitute instructors and adjunct faculty.
- Direct instructors in the improvement of their instruction and in the performance of their other duties.
- Evaluate performance of faculty, classified personnel, and student assistants.
- Assure that instructional program articulation is current with high schools, colleges, and universities.
- Evaluate and approve/disapprove:
- Requisitions for all supplies, replacements, field trips, memberships, printing and duplicating, repairs, special contracts, consultants, and capital outlay.
- Requests for conference attendance, field trips, vehicles, and leave of absence.
- Textbook orders.
- Printing order for in-house printing and duplication.
- Work orders for maintenance department construction, painting, repair, telephone installation or change, and moving of furniture or equipment.
- Other requests from faculty and classified staff.
- Develop and direct a program of orientation and in-service education for members of the faculty and classified staff.
- Determine if equipment, classrooms and buildings are well maintained or in good working condition, and when necessary, order maintenance or repair.
- Assume additional managerial responsibilities.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS*
- Sensitive to, and understanding of, the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, ethnic and disability backgrounds of community college students and the community at-large.
- A master's degree and one year of related formal training, internship, or leadership experience.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS*
- A doctorate degree.
- Experience in curriculum development.
- Experience in grant development and resource acquisition.
- Experience teaching college-level courses to culturally diverse and nontraditional students.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Regular, full time, academic management position. Salary range: $91,942 to $103,296 per year based on 224 working days (placement dependent upon relevant experience). Annual doctoral stipend: $1,500. District-assisted health and welfare coverage for employee and dependents includes medical, dental, and vision. Life, accident, and income protection insurance premiums are available for the employee only. The District participates in contributions to the appropriate retirement system.
All offers of employment are contingent upon approval by the Board of Trustees, receipt of official transcripts verifying the degree stipulated under the minimum qualifications section, employment verification, and any other pertinent documentation.
Individual selected is required to be fingerprinted and must submit to a tuberculosis examination.
