English/Academic Systems Instructor

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
Responsible teaching composition skills in English from developmental classes through the college freshman transfer English composition classes in a computer laboratory setting utilizing selected computer software, such for as Academic Systems. Fulfill the professional responsibilities of a full-time faculty member, including, but not limited to: Teaching all scheduled classes; following the course outline; keeping accurate records of student enrollment, attendance, and progress; posting and maintaining scheduled office hours; developing curriculum; participating in departmental meetings and college-wide activities and committees; and maintaining relationships with feeder schools as well as the business/industry community through our school relations office and personal contact with local firms. Assignment may include day, evening, and weekend hours, and classes off the main campus.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: *
- Must be sensitive to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students and the community at-large.
- A Master's in English, literature, comparative literature, or composition OR a Bachelor's in any of the above AND a Master's in linguistics, TESL, speech, education with a specialization in reading, creative writing, or journalism OR the equivalent. (Applicants applying for equivalency consideration must submit a District form for Equivalency Committee review.)
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:*
- Experience teaching English to culturally diverse and nontraditional students.
- Experience instructing English in a computer lab setting.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Full time, academic, temporary replacement for Spring and Fall semesters of 2004. Salary range: $42,226 to $59,983 based on 177 days (placement dependent upon educational background and appropriate full-time teaching experience). District-assisted health and welfare coverage for employee and dependents includes medical, dental, and vision. Life, accident, and income protection insurance premiums are available for the employee only. State Teacher's Retirement System (STRS) membership is required. The District participates in contributions to STRS.
Individual selected must be fingerprinted and submit to a tuberculosis examination.
Schedule/Timeline:**
A hiring recommendation committee will review qualified applicants with completed application packets the week of
November 17. Chosen applicants will be interviewed the week of December 1, and applicants chosen for final consideration will be interviewed the week of December 15. The position start date is January 21, 2003.
