EOPS/CARE Counselor

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

Responsible for full-time assignment in Counseling to serve students in accordance with the EOPS guidelines. Performs a variety of counseling/advising duties including, but not limited to, academic advisement, educational planning, transfer and career counseling, job readiness preparation, community resources/network development and personal counseling. The counselor may also teach counseling and guidance courses; develop EOPS workshops; conduct individual and/or group counseling sessions; conduct structured field trips to four year transfer institutions; review catalogs, brochures and other literature pertaining to EOPS; attend staff development activities; complete informational reports as required; attend and participate in scheduled staff meetings; maintain established office hours; assist with student orientation, recruitment and registration; serve as a liaison with assigned academic divisions, departments or special areas; administer and interpret appropriate standardized tests; counsel and advise ESL (English as a Second Language) students; and perform other duties as assigned. The position may include a combination of irregular hours and/or some evenings at peak periods such as orientation, registration, and summer session. The Counselor will also be expected to assume the usual non-teaching/counseling duties such as serving on college committees.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: *

  • Must be sensitive to and understanding of, the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability and ethnic backgrounds of community college students and the community at-large.
  • A Master's in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, education counseling, social work, or career development OR the equivalent. (Applicants applying for equivalency consideration must submit a District form for Equivalency Committee review.)
  • A minimum of nine semester units of college course work predominantly relating to ethnic minorities or persons handicapped by language, social, or economic disadvantages OR Six semester units or the equivalent of a college-level counseling practicum or counseling field-work courses in a community college EOPS program, or in a program dealing predominantly with ethnic minorities or persons handicapped by language, social, or economic disadvantages.
  • Two years of occupational experience in work relating to ethnic minorities or persons handicapped by language, social, or economic disadvantages.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:*

  • Bilingual in Spanish and English.
  • Professional counseling experience in an accredited educational institution.
  • A background in teaching or counseling culturally diverse, nontraditional, or low-income students in an educational setting.
  • Knowledge of federal and state student financial aid procedures.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Full-time academic, position. Starting salary range: $42,226 to $59,983 per academic year based on 177 days (placement dependent upon educational background and appropriate full-time counseling and/or teaching experience). District-assisted health and welfare coverage for employee and dependents includes medical, dental, and vision. Life, accident, and income protection insurance premiums are available for the employee only. State Teacher's Retirement System (STRS) membership is required. District participates in contributions to STRS. Position is contingent on renewal of annual funding.

All offers of employment are contingent upon approval by the Board of Trustees, receipt of official transcripts verifying the degree stipulated under the minimum qualifications section, employment verification, and any other pertinent documentation.

Individual selected must be fingerprinted and submit to a tuberculosis examination.

Schedule/Timeline:**
A hiring recommendation committee will review qualified applicants with completed application packets the week of November 17. Chosen applicants will be interviewed the week of December 1, and applicants chosen for final consideration will be interviewed the week of December 15. The position start date is January 21, 2003.
