FINANCIAL AID SPECIALIST

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES

  • Prepare needs analysis and package of financial aid applicants; review completed applications for completeness; assist students with development of financial information; determine which programs would best suit student needs.
  • Verify application information and supporting documentation; recalculate financial need as required; evaluate special circumstances influencing need analysis results and recommend appropriate changes in awards.
  • Coordinate activities of State and federal student loan programs; generate letters to communicate process matters.
  • Advise and counsel student applicants and recipients in phases of financial aid; explain program regulations, requirements and institutional policies; approve award letter notifications.
  • Plan, organize and conduct orientations and workshops; recruit potential students to the program; prepare newsletters and deliver oral presentations to students, parents, counselors and others.
  • Audit files and determine students' continued eligibility for financial aid; certify student loan eligibility as assigned.
  • Coordinate activities with other related on-campus student services; refer students to social service agencies and other community resources as appropriate.
  • Maintain external contacts with government agencies and other community colleges for the purpose of coordinating, obtaining and verifying information; transfer electronically financial aid decisions from federal agency; communicate decisions to students.
  • Maintain current knowledge of regulations and requirements for financial aid and student loan programs; attend and conduct various meetings; lead and participate in on- and off-campus workshops.
  • Operate a computer and related software to enter and retrieve data; operate calculator, copier and other standard business machines.
  • Prepare and maintain reports, files, records and correspondence related to financial aid matters; process incoming and outgoing financial aid transcripts.
  • Monitor grant check process and disbursements; determine necessary corrections on electronic pell payment vouchers.
  • Provide technical expertise to other personnel, faculty, students and the public regarding financial aid programs and services.
  • Process BOGG applications according to established procedures.
  • Assist in training new staff as requested; assist with developing work schedules for student workers as assigned.



QUALIFICATIONS*

  • Must be sensitive to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability and ethnic backgrounds of community college students and the community-at-large.
  • Any combination equivalent to: An AA and three years of increasingly responsible experience in a student services or related program.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish), and financial aid experience desired.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

Regular, full-time, 12 months per year position. Starting monthly salary: $3,211; Range: $3,211 to $3,907 (5 steps). District-assisted health and welfare coverage for employee and dependents includes medical, dental, and vision. District-assisted life, accident and income protection insurance is provided for the employee only. Must become a member of the California School Employees Association (CSEA) and the Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS). The District pays the classified employee's contribution to PERS. Hours: Mondays to Wednesdays, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; Thursdays 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.; and Fridays 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.



All offers of employment are contingent upon approval by the Board of Trustees, receipt of official transcripts verifying the degree stipulated under the minimum qualifications section, employment verification, and any other pertinent documentation.

Individual selected is required to be fingerprinted and must submit to a tuberculosis examination.
