GEAR UP COUNSELOR (SOLEDAD)

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

The GEAR UP counselor will be responsible for full-time assignment to serve high school students in Soledad. The counselor will perform a variety of counseling/advising duties including, but not limited to: academic advisement, assisting students and maintaining currency with University and college admission requirements, educational planning, transfer and career counseling, job readiness preparation, community resources/network development and personal counseling. The counselor may also teach counseling and guidance courses; develop college preparation workshops; conduct individual and/or group counseling sessions; review catalogs, brochures and other literature pertaining to assigned areas; attend staff development activities; complete informational reports as required; attend and participate in scheduled staff meetings; maintain established office hours; assist with student orientation, recruitment and registration; serve as a liaison with assigned academic divisions, departments or special areas; administer and interpret appropriate standardized tests; counsel and advise ESL (English as a Second Language) students; and perform other duties as assigned. The position may include a combination of irregular hours and/or some evening at peak periods such as orientation, registration, and summer session. The counselor will also be expected to assume the usual non-teaching/counseling duties such as serving on college committees.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:*

  • Must be sensitive to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability and ethnic backgrounds of community college students and the community at-large.
  • Bilingual (English and Spanish).
  • A Master's in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, or career development OR The equivalent from an accredited institution. (Applicants applying for equivalency consideration must submit a District form for Equivalency Committee review.)

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:*

  • Professional counseling experience in an accredited educational institution.
  • A background in teaching or counseling culturally diverse, nontraditional students in an educational setting.
  • Experience counseling/advising high school students.
  • Experience working with parents and/or parent groups.
  • Knowledge of University and college admission requirements.
  • Knowledge of federal and state student financial aid procedures.
  • A K-12 PSS credential.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Full time, academic position. Starting salary range: $42,395 to $60,223 per academic year based on 177 days (placement dependent upon educational background and appropriate full-time teaching and counseling experience). District-assisted health and welfare coverage for employee and dependents includes medical, dental, and vision. Life, accident, and income protection insurance premiums are available for the employee only. State Teacher's Retirement System (STRS) membership is required. The District participates in contributions to STRS. Work location: Soledad High School in Soledad, CA. Position is contingent upon renewal of annual grant funding.

All offers of employment are contingent upon approval by the Board of Trustees, receipt of official transcripts verifying the degree stipulated under the minimum qualifications section, employment verification, and any other pertinent documentation.

Individual selected must be fingerprinted and submit to a tuberculosis examination.

Schedule/Timeline:**

A hiring recommendation committee will review qualified applicants with completed application packets on Friday, July 16. Chosen applicants will be interviewed on July 21 and chosen candidates will go for final interviews on July 29. The position start date is August 12, 2004.
