INSTRUCTIONAL SPECIALIST (Reading & Writing)

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

  • Assist academic staff in the implementation of curriculum by performing specific instructional tasks, such as tutoring students, administering and correcting tests, checking materials and equipment in and out, preparing review and reinforcement of work sheets, instructing students in the operation of equipment, compiling student scores, correcting written material for grammar, punctuation and syntax, assigning grades according to established scales and assigning work to students based upon progress and curriculum plans
  • Develop lesson plans in accordance with curriculum to present information and reinforce skills.
  • Tutor, drill, reinforce and assist individuals and groups of students in reading, language, writing, mathematics and other subjects according to instructions and guidance from teacher; proctor tests; demonstrate computer and word processing procedures to students.
  • Assist students in selected subjects for remedial, supplemental or enrichment purposes; observe progress of students and share observations with instructor.
  • Operate and assist students in the use of audio-visual equipment, computer software, and listening centers.
  • Correct and score assignments; record grades; administer and score skill level, learning disabilities and other assessment tests as appropriate.
  • Orient students to the programs and learning laboratory; schedule and conduct orientations; assist in the maintenance of classroom discipline.
  • Research and prepare instructional and motivational materials.
  • Strive to maximize self-reliance of students in activities and frequently utilize approved behavior modification techniques to encourage selected behaviors.
  • Maintain student records and monitor student progress.
  • Provide individualized assistance in the completion and understanding of work assignments.
  • Assign workstations, folders, books, equipment and materials to students according to established procedures.
  • Perform a variety of clerical and record-keeping activities; operate office equipment, such as a copy machine; take attendance and maintain student hours of lab use; operate a computer and assigned word processing database and spreadsheet programs to maintain records.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: *
  • Any combination equivalent to: A Bachelor’s degree in language arts or a related field and two years experience working in an instructional setting.
  • Must be sensitive to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability and ethnic backgrounds of community college students and the community-at-large.
  • Familiarity with related educational software desired.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Regular, part-time (30 hours per week), 11 months per year position. Starting monthly salary: $1,982.25; Range $1,982.25 to $2,408.25. Vacation and sick leave are accrued on a pro-rated basis. Must become a member of the Public Employees’ Retirement System (PERS) and the California School Employees Association (CSEA). The District pays the classified employee’s contribution to PERS. Hours: 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., Monday to Friday.

All offers of employment are contingent upon approval by the Board of Trustees, receipt of official transcripts verifying the degree stipulated under the minimum qualifications section, employment verification, and any other pertinent documentation.

Individual selected is required to be fingerprinted and must submit to a tuberculosis examination.
