LANGUAGE LAB SPECIALIST

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

  • Provide orientation regarding the installed technical tools for new faculty and students in the Language Lab.
  • Research emerging technology and software as they relate to ESL and foreign languages.
  • Serve as an instructional technology resource for faculty, other staff, and students.
  • Install software and prepare new computers for use. Test systems to insure functionality in the technical environment.
  • Troubleshoot and maintain software and hardware as needed.
  • Respond to faculty requests and inquiries related to the use, modification, and/or enhancement of hardware and software systems.
  • Write memos and reports, assist in writing system configuration as needed.
  • Assist faculty with integrating technology into the classroom.
  • Develop understanding and facility in the subject matter being taught in the labs, and be able to respond to the subject matter as well as the technology being used.
  • Assist students who are not familiar with the equipment or computer software to become competent and able to use the lab properly.
  • Assume the usual non-instructional duties such as serving on college committees, developing curriculum, keeping scheduled office hours, and maintaining relationships with feeder schools.
  • Assignment may include day, evening, and weekend hours, and classes off the main campus.
This is a 35-hour per week assignment, including 24 hours per week of instruction in the learning skills center with the balance of time devoted to preparation, committee work, and normal faculty duties.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:*

  • Must be sensitive to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability and ethnic backgrounds of community college students and the community at-large.
  • A Master's in TESL, TESOL, applied linguistics with a TESL emphasis, linguistics with a TESL emphasis, English with a TESL emphasis, or education with a TESL emphasis OR A Bachelor's in TESL, TESOL, AND A Master's in linguistics, applied linguistics, English, composition, bilingual/bicultural studies, reading, speech or any foreign language. OR
  • A Master's in any language OR A Bachelor's in any language AND A Master's in linguistics.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:*

  • College course work in instructional technology, computers, or a related field.
  • Experience as a technician in a LAN providing personal computer support.
  • Experience with the use of computers in the language/ESL curriculum.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Regular, full time, academic, tenure-track position beginning August 2003. Annual starting salary range: $41,680 to $57,126 based on 177 days (placement dependent upon educational background and appropriate full-time teaching experience). District-assisted health and welfare coverage for employee and dependents includes medical, dental, and vision. Life, accident, and income protection insurance premiums are available for the employee only. State Teacher's Retirement System (STRS) membership is required. The District participates in contributions to STRS.

All offers of employment are contingent upon approval by the Board of Trustees, receipt of official transcripts verifying the degree stipulated under the minimum qualifications section, employment verification, and any other pertinent documentation.

Individual selected must be fingerprinted and submit to a tuberculosis examination.
