MATHEMATICS INSTRUCTOR

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
Responsible for teaching courses in mathematics which range from pre-collegiate courses, (i.e. arithmetic, elementary and intermediate algebra, plane geometry, and trigonometry) through math for liberal arts, numbers systems, finite math, calculus, statistics, linear algebra, and differential equations. Participate in curriculum development and implementation of computer-assisted mathematics instruction. Fulfill the professional responsibilities of a full-time faculty member, including, but not limited to: teaching all scheduled classes; following the course outline; keeping and submitting accurate records of student enrollment, attendance, progress and grades; posting and maintaining scheduled office hours; developing curriculum; participating in departmental meetings and college-wide activities and committees; and maintaining relationships with feeder schools as well as the business/industry community through our school relations office and personal contact with local firms. Assignment may include day, evening, weekend classes, and duties off the main campus.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:*
- Must be sensitive to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability and ethnic backgrounds of community college students and the community at-large.
- A Master's in mathematics or applied mathematics
OR
- A Bachelor's in either of the above AND a Master's in statistics, physics, or mathematics education OR
- The equivalent from an accredited institution. (Applicants applying for equivalency consideration must submit a District form for Equivalency Committee review.)
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:*
- Experience teaching mathematics to culturally diverse and nontraditional students.
- Knowledge of the use of computers in the mathematics curriculum.
- Familiarity with software such as Mathematica, Maple or Minitab.
- Willingness to incorporate appropriate technology in courses at all levels.
- Familiarity with graphing calculators.
- Membership in relevant mathematical organizations.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Regular, full time, academic, tenure-track position beginning August 2003. Starting salary range: $41,680 to $57,126 per academic year based on 177 days (placement dependent upon educational background and appropriate full-time teaching and counseling experience). District-assisted health and welfare coverage for employee and dependents includes medical, dental, and vision. Life, accident, and income protection insurance premiums are available for the employee only. State Teacher's Retirement System (STRS) membership is required. The District participates in contributions to STRS.
Individual selected must be fingerprinted and submit to a tuberculosis examination.
