Mathematics Learning Skills Specialist

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
Responsible for teaching self-paced mathematics courses in a laboratory setting. Typical courses include pre-algebra, elementary and intermediate algebra and supplemental lab courses for more advanced math lecture courses. May be assigned additional collegiate courses such as trigonometry, pre-calculus, statistics, calculus or linear algebra in a non-laboratory setting. Participate in curriculum development and implementation of technology in the classroom and lab. Fulfill the professional responsibilities of a full time faculty member, including, but not limited: teaching all scheduled classes; following the course outline; keeping accurate records of student enrollment, attendance, and progress; posting and maintaining scheduled office hours; developing curriculum; participating in departmental meetings and college-wide activities and committees; and maintaining relationships with feeder schools as well as the business/industry community. Assignment may include day and evening classes, and weekend classes.
This is a 35-hour per week assignment, including 24 hours per week of instruction in the learning skills center with the balance of time devoted to preparation, committee work, and normal faculty duties.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: *
- Must be sensitive to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students and the community at-large.
- A Master's Degree in mathematics or applied mathematics OR a Bachelor's Degree in mathematics or applied mathematics and Master's Degree in statistics, physics, or mathematics education OR the equivalent from an accredited institution. (Equivalency consideration requires completion of a District form for Committee review.)
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:*
- Experience teaching mathematics.
- Knowledge of the use of computers in the mathematics curriculum.
- Familiarity with software such as Mathematica, Maple, Minitab, or Academic Systems.
- Willingness to incorporate appropriate technology in courses at all levels.
- Familiarity with graphing calculators.
- Membership in relevant mathematical organizations.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Regular, full time, academic, tenure-track position beginning August 12, 2004. Annual starting salary range: $42,226 to $59,983 based on 177 days (placement dependent upon educational background and appropriate full-time teaching experience). District-assisted health and welfare coverage for employee and dependents includes medical, dental, and vision. Life, accident, and income protection insurance premiums are available for the employee only. State Teacher's Retirement System (STRS) membership is required. The District participates in contributions to STRS.
Individual selected must be fingerprinted and submit to a tuberculosis examination.
