Week One - Getting Online and History of the Internet

This first week will give us an opportunity to learn more about one another and make sure we are all comfortable working with the online class format. Please take a few minutes to read through the course syllabus. If you have any questions about course content, assignments, requirements, or deadlines, please contact me to set up an appointment to meet by telephone or person.

Take a few minutes to familiarize yourself with e-College. Click the Gradebook tab to view the online gradebook. Click the email tab to access the built-in tool that will allow you to send an email to me or your classmates. Click the Dropbox tab to see where you will upload assignment files for me to retrieve, review and grade. Finally, click the Webliography tab to view the many useful links I have added.

We will start by learning how the Internet came about and how it works. Read chapters 1 and 2 in Internet Effectively. Don't forget to complete assignment 1 and post your introduction in this week's discussion forum.

Also, I'd like you to all think about how students learn. Take a moment to view this intriguing online movie created by students: Vision of Students Today. Make sure you have the sound enabled on your computer or are wearing headphones

Week Two - Using the Internet, Part 1

This week we will really get into the mechanics of using the Internet. You will have an opportunity to complete some hands-on exercises to become more comfortable and familiar with Internet resources.

Read chapters 3-5 in the Internet Effectively text. As you read the text, the author will provide you the addresses of web sites to visit. Make sure you visit each listed web site as these are provided as examples to help you better understand the concepts being discussed.

Week Five - Developing an Effective Research Plan

For the next few weeks, we will concentrate on how to use Internet and Web-based resources to conduct college-level research. This is a golden opportunity to use a research project from one of your other classes to complete the requirements of two classes.

Weeks Six & Seven - Conducting Scholarly Research

For the next two weeks, you will have time to search for information relating to the topic you described within your research proposal. Using the Exploratory Research Document template, you will record the necessary information to evaluate each source and provide the necessary information to construct a bibliographic citation.

You may access online databases and the library catalog from the Hartnell Library home page located at http://www.hartnell.edu/library/ or you may access the databases directly using the web addresses and log on instructions found in the handout available from this week's online lecture web page.

If you are accessing databases from off campus using the links on the library home page, you will be prompted to enter a library card number. This will be the number on the back of your Cat Card. If your Cat Card number doesn't work, use the following: INTERLIT

Week Eight -Bibliographic Citation

This week you will select six of the sources from your Exploratory Research Document, then reformat them into an annotated bibliography.

Spring Break March 29 - April 3, 2010: No Classes!

Week Nine - Introduction to Web Page Creation

Starting this week, we will spend the next month learning how to create and publish Web pages. Each week, I will hold open drop in labs to provide hands-on assistance to students. During each lab, we will walk through the assignment, step-by-step. At the end of the lab session, you will have created and published your very own Web pages. This week's lab will be held in the Information Competency Center within the Library. Please check the Announcements for the exact date and time.

Macintosh users can use any text editor to create web pages using HTML coding.

Week Ten - More Web Page Creation

This week's assignment provides an opportunity to create a style sheet and apply it to a Web page. For more information about Cascading Style Sheets, view the following online tutorials:

Week Eleven -HTML Editors

The first two Web page assignments asked you to create pages and a style sheet using Notepad, a text editor. For this week's assignment, you will download and explore how to use HTML editors. The textbook provides step-by-step instructions to assist you. In addition, you may attend this week's drop in lab for more assistance. The editors you will be test-driving are:

Assignment 10: Create Web Pages with an HTML Editor Program

Week Twelve -Internet Graphics and Multimedia

This week you will have an opportunity to explore online graphics and multimedia. You will also have an opportunity to make your own animated image and place it on a new Web page linking all your previous pages into a comprehensive Web site. As in the previous weeks, I will host a drop in lab session to provide step by step instructions. The drop in session will be held in L212, the Information Competency Center on the second floor of the library. Check this week's announcements for the date and time.

Week Seventeen - Final: Electronic Portfolio

Use this time to work on your final project--an electronic portfolio. Once you have completed your portfolio and sent the web address to me for review and grading, please post your final reflections in this week's discussion forum. If you need assistance creating your portfolio, please make an appointment to drop by my office. I'm in CAB 101, working Tuesday-Friday from 1 p.m. till 9 p.m. and Saturdays, from 8:30 a.m. till 1:30 p.m. You may set up an appointment with me by email, jfellguth@hartnell.edu or by calling Karen, my assistant, at 755-6719.
