Creating Directories and publishing Web Pages to the

Yahoo/Geocities Web-Students Web Site

Step One: Go to http://geocities.yahoo.com/. You will see the following screen:

Step Two: Go to the area on the right hand side of the screen that reads Current Customers and click the text that reads Sign In.

Enter the Yahoo ID of web_students and the password  hartnell and then click the Sign in button.

You will see a screen that looks like this:

 

Step Three: Click the link that reads "http://webhosting.yahoo.com" You will see the following screen:

Step Four: Click the Manage tab under the heading GeoCities Control Panel as shown above.

You will see the following screen:

Step Five: Click the File Manager link as shown above.

You will see a screen that looks similar to this:

Step Six: The first time you log onto this site, you will need to create a subdirectory in which to upload your web page files. To do this, click the Create Subdirectory link as shown above.

You will see a screen that looks like this:

Step Seven: Create a subdirectory name for yourself (mine would be jfellguth) and type it into the box labeled Subdirectory Name. Once you have done this, click the Create Subdirectory button.

You will be returned to the screen which lists all the subdirectories that have been created. Click the name of the subdirectory you have just created.

Step Eight:  Once you have opened your new subdirectory, click Create Subdirectory again. This time, create a subdirectory within your new directory and name it images making sure the name is in all lower case letters. You are now ready to move your web page and image files up to the server.

Step Nine: Open your new images folder by clicking on the images link as shown above. You will see a display that looks like this:

Step Ten: Click the Upload Files link as shown above. This will bring up a screen that looks like this:

 

Step Eleven: Click the Browse button next to the first box. You will then be able to navigate to the images folder on your jump drive or disk or hard drive and select each of the images you downloaded from the textbook web site (see link on the assignment 6 web page) and then click the uploads files button as shown above. Upload all the images into your Yahoo/Geocities images folder. Once you have uploaded all your image files, you will see the following screen. Notice the message on the right hand side of the screen that tells you your image files have loaded correctly.

Step Twelve: Click the Continue to File Manager link on the right hand side of the screen as shown above.  You will see a screen similar to this:

Step Thirteen: Now you need to move up a level to your basic root directory where you will upload your new web page files. To do this, click the Up one level link as shown above. You will see a screen similar to this:

Step Fourteen: Click the Upload Files link as shown above and upload your new web page files (example: camping.htm and campinginfo.htm) into your folder on Yahoo/Geocities. Once you have done this, you will have published your web pages to the Internet. To make sure your links work and your images display properly, type your web address (http://web-students.net/name of your directory, i.e. jfellguth) into the address box in your browser and click Go:

Click on the link for each of your web pages to view it. In a few weeks, we will create a table of contents web page for your web site that will automatically appear once you type in the address for your web site. For now, you will need to click on the links to access your web pages.
