Instructions:
The purpose of this assignment is to use information from the Exploratory Research Document to create a correctly formatted annotated bibliography with grammatically correct annotations and citations for six of your sources listed in the ERD.
Of these six sources, two must be scholarly sources and one must be a primary source (original research, interview, diary entry, etc.). You will be using the information you have already collected and listed in the various fields of the ERD document to create your annotations.
When creating the correctly formatted citations for your six sources, be sure to use MLA or APA as your citation format. List which format you are using. Your textbook includes sample citations so you can double check your formatting. There are also sample guides on the Hartnell Library Web site, http://www.hartnell.edu/library/citations.html.
Each citation should be followed by an annotation that includes a summary of what the source is about and how it relates to your topic. You will also need to evaluate the source to indicate whether it is a scholarly or nonscholarly publication and whether it represents primary or secondary research. Here is an example of what a citation and accompanying annotation should look like (MLA format):
Podesta, John (February, 2004) USA Patriot Act. The Good, the Bad, and the Sunset. Electronic Privacy Information Center (Online). Available: http://www.abanet.org/irr/hr/winter02/podesta.html
This article breaks down and analyses the Patriot Act, by subsection, as it pertains to internet privacy. It is a clear, concise and easy to read summation.
This source was located through Google, using the keyword Boolean search "Patriot Act AND Internet AND Privacy". This search was for Web sites and organizations concerned with the P.A. and internet privacy. The article was found within the Web site of the Electronic Privacy Information Center.
The author is a visiting law professor at George University Law Center. The information appears to be accurate and current. The Web site appears to be advocating, and the author is a former chief of staff to president Clinton, this information should be considered in that frame of reference. Though the author is clearly a scholar there are no citations or footnotes. This is mostly analysis and opinion, therefore a secondary source.
Remember, you are not creating an actual research paper, just an annotated bibliography that includes your original research proposal, following the instructions listed above. Here is a link to an example of an annotated bibliography that contains most of the elements required as part of this assignment: Sample annotated bibliography.
