Hartnell music faculty member William Faulkner, who is also a world-renowned Jalisco harpist, performed in a traditional Mexican ensemble on New Year’s Eve at First Night Monterey. Michele and I were able to catch the first performance, and we were barely able to get in the room due to the interest in the performance.

Faulkner performed with folkloric dancer Pilar Mendoza and vocalist Carlos Villagomez, and they filled the room with the sounds and sights of melodies and dance.  Sponsored by the city of Monterey, “First Night” has rung in the New Year with a celebration of the arts for the past 26 years. For 2019, there were 65 music, art and dance performances at numerous venues in and around the Portola Hotel and Alvarado Street.
