Hartnell gets an A+ for implementing smoke/tobacco-free policy

SALINAS, Calif. – The Hartnell Community College District received an A+ from the California Youth Advocacy Network (CYAN) and Campuses Organized and United for Good Health (COUGH) for our 100% smoke/tobacco-free policy, which includes e-cigarettes.

Hartnell College is the only one in Region 4 to get an A+; this region includes 13 community colleges in Contra Costa, Alameda, Santa Clara, San Benito, and Monterey Counties.

“We commend your institution for adopting and implementing a strong smoke/tobacco-free policy that protects the health and well-being of all members of your campus community and promotes a safe and clean learning and working environment,” read a statement in letter received from CYAN and COUGH.

Superintendent/President, Dr. Willard Lewallen said, “I am proud that the Hartnell CCD has been awarded an A+ grade by the California Youth Advocacy Network for having smoke-free/tobacco-free campuses.  With support from administration, faculty, staff, and students, the HCCD Board of Trustees adopted a board policy on May 5, 2015 implementing smoke-free and tobacco-free campuses.”

COUGH students and CYAN staff did an extensive policy review of all 146 California public college and university policies in May 2016.   A copy of the full report is available at http://cyanonline.org/.
