Hartnell Art Faculty Exhibition: An Ongoing Tradition

January 9th, 2013

To welcome spring semester 2013, the Hartnell College Gallery presents works by current and former faculty of the Art Department. More than a dozen members of the current staff and emeritus faculty will present examples of their work that showcases the Art Department's 76 years of service to the community. The exhibit runs through February 9.

From its founding in 1936 by Leon Amyx, the Art Department has offered the opportunity for generations of Hartnell students to study and explore a wide variety of media. This exhibition allows visitors to see the highly personal and diverse approaches that a small core of fulltime faculty and a talented and dedicated array of adjunct instructors--with wide-ranging skills and differing viewpoints--have brought to their art and to the art program.

Current staff members include: Eric Bosler, photography; Angela Gleason, jewelry and metal-smithing; Calvin Kanow, drawing and design; Pam Murakami, ceramics; Jerri Nemiro, photography and digital arts; Jennifer Pagliaro, art history; Ted Quitevis, technician; Sylvia Rios, ceramics; Nancy Sevier, art appreciation; Trish Sullivan, painting. Each has selected a representative sampling of work for this exhibition. Pieces by Leon Amyx, Joe Bragdon and Gary Smith, former members of the faculty, will give a sampling of the work of previous staff members, whose many years of service laid the foundations for the current program.

A reception for the artists will take place on Friday, February 1, 2013, from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Gallery. Hartnell president, Dr. Willard Lewallen, a dedicated musician, will perform along with special guests during the event. Sponsored by the Hartnell College Foundation through the Burrill Leonard Fund, the reception will give members of the wider Hartnell community the chance to see and hear the accomplishments of their colleagues. The public is invited and there is no charge for either the exhibition or the reception.

The Art Gallery is located in the Visual Arts Building on the main Hartnell campus, with an entrance off West Alisal Street. Gallery hours are Monday through Thursday, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 6 to 9 p.m. The reception is Friday from 4 to 6 p.m.
