The Hartnell College Men's and Women's track and field teams kicked off the 2009 season with a wet and rain-soaked Coast Conference Preview meet at West Valley College on Friday. On the men's side, the Panthers were able to take the top individual honors in five running events. Isaias Valdez won the 100 meters (11.33), Benny Lopez in the 200 meters (23.45), Antonio Leal at 800 meters (2:03.40), and Daniel Tapia sweeping both the 1500 and 3000 meter runs in 4:16 and 9:02. Cesar Puga won the hammer throw in a state leading and new personal best 163'1". Sophomore Chase Knisely took top honors in the javelin with a throw of 137'2".
For the women, Freshman Treya Winfield and sophomore Dominga Arzate produced the highest individual places. Winfield was second in the 400 meter dash (62.60). Arzate ran her way to a runner-up spot in the 3000 meter run (11:50), and third in the 1500 meter run (5:23). Winfield and Arzate qualified provisionally to the Norcal regional meet.
The Hartnell College track and field team will host a five team Norcal rotational meet Friday, Feb. 13th. The meet will be attended by Monterey Peninsula College, Reedley College, Merritt College, and Modesto Junior College. Field events are scheduled to begin at 11:30 am with running events to follow at 1:00 pm.
