Hartnell College's two creative writing clubs, Circo Poetry Club and the Homestead Review Club, have just published their fourth literary journal. The Language Arts students at Hartnell Collge publish the journal twice a year. Grants from the President's Office, the Office of Instruction and help from the Hartnell College Foundation support Homestead Review's learning and publications program.
Maria Tabor, a poet and a creative writing instructor at Hartnell edits the publication. She said, "Our magazine features works from all over the world as well as from locals. This issue has a poem by Alberta Jimenez, a student at California State University Monterey Bay. Her poem, 'Los Campesinos' won first place in the tri-county poetry competition, Poetic Voices/Voces Poeticas."
This year there were seven Hartnell students who worked on putting the publication together. "They individually rated the poems and fiction and then we worked together to determine what was used. It gives the students a chance to really display their creative abilities," Tabor said. "They learn so much."
Tabor said the college's Department of Reprographics did the cover. "It is a scene from Alabama. They really did a great job," Tabor exclaimed.
"I want to remind the community that we seek poetry, short fiction, book reviews, interviews and black and white photography for the publication. We publish in the spring and fall, " she said. "Send your submissions to Editor, Homestead Review, Hartnell College, 411 Central Ave., Salinas, CA 93901. Include a brief biographical sketch, an email or fax number and a self addressed stamped envelope for return of manuscripts," she added.
