The public is warmly invited to the Grand Opening of the first phase of renovations to the Hartnell College athletic facilities at noon on Thursday, April 15. Come see our new baseball and softball diamonds and soccer field at a ceremony hosted by KSBW’s Dennis Lehnen.
The baseball and softball fields feature state-of-the-art playing surfaces, press boxes, batting cages, and bullpens. These upgrades will position Hartnell to host post-season contests for the California Community College Commission on Athletics as well as elite, amateur, and community tournaments.
The soccer field’s renovations include grass turf, FIFA soccer goals, scoreboards, and a viewing area for fans. The field is compliant with FIFA dimensions, opening up a myriad of hosting possibilities for Hartnell.
A free community barbecue will begin Thursday's festivities on the west side of the main campus, followed by a brief program featuring Salinas Mayor Dennis Donohue, former MLB player and Hartnell alumnus Ernie Camacho, Division 1 Football Offensive Coordinator at San Diego State and Hartnell alumnus Al Borges, Hartnell College Athletic Director Danny Teresa, and artist John Cerney, whose wall relief of legendary Hartnell athlete Tony Teresa will be unveiled at the ceremony. The new baseball diamond will be called the Tony Teresa Diamond.
The festivities will culminate in intercollegiate competition by the men’s and women’s teams. Pat Teresa will throw out the ceremonial first pitch at the men’s 2 p.m. baseball game, and Lauren Jimenez will throw out the ceremonial first pitch at the women’s 2:30 p.m. softball game.
