The Hartnell College Symphonic Band presents its spring concert, John Steinbeck Meets "Peter and the Wolf," on Tuesday, May 15, at 7:30 p.m., under the direction of Dr. Carl Christensen. The concert features two major works for narrator and band: "Peter and the Wolf" by Sergei Prokofiev, and Symphony for Band: East of Eden by Robert Nelson. Steve Reinertsen will narrate. The concert also will showcase American works by Duke Ellington, Woody Guthrie, and Irving Berlin.
The Hartnell College Choir and Chamber Singersí spring choral concert will take place on Friday, May 18, at 7:30 p.m. The concert will feature many genres of music, including Broadway show tunes, American Bandstand favorites, pop hits, traditional spirituals, a 16th century madrigal, and more. Sandy Rudo directs the choral groups.
On Thursday, May 24, at 7:30 p.m., the Hartnell College Symphony Orchestra will present its spring concert, From Schubert and Mozart to "Turkey in the Straw." The orchestra, led by Dr. Carl Christensen, will perform Schubertís Symphony No. 8 in B minor, popularly known as The Unfinished Symphony; Vivaldiís Concerto for Two Violins, featuring Rosemarie Nikolakakis and Berlyn Vincente; Selections from "The Magic Flute" by Mozart; and pieces united by traditional American themes.
These three performances will be held on the Main Stage Theatre of the Performing Arts Facility on the main campus at 411 Central Avenue in Salinas.
Then, on Tuesday, May 29, the Hartnell College Jazz Ensemble will perform traditional jazz, Latin, blues, pop, and rock in its Spring Jazz Concert. The 8 p.m. show will be in the recital hall, room 125 of the Performing Arts Facility. The concert will include special guest performances by The Antique Moving Company dancing to "Sing, Sing, Sing," and by the percussion students of Karl Stearns.
No tickets are required for the concerts, but donations may be requested at the door. Parking is available in the new state-of-the-art parking structure located on Central Avenue across from Central Park. The daily rate is $1 per day or 25 cents per hour.
