African American Graduates at Hartnell College to be Honored
May 16, 2005
About 13 African American students at Hartnell College, who will graduate
in June, will be honored for their academic success at a special ceremony on
Friday, May 20. The third annual Kente Ceremony will be held at 6 p.m. in Steinbeck
Hall of the College Center.
The ceremony honors black students who are graduating from Hartnell, transferring to a four-year college or university, and/or receiving a certificate of achievement, according to Millicent Madrigal, Hartnell counselor and president-elect of Sankofa, an organization of Hartnell's African American faculty and staff members who sponsor the event.
The guest speaker will be Jerry Smith, a member of the board of supervisors of Monterey County. Graduates will be presented with a brightly colored kente stole and a certificate of achievement.
The event also will feature African drumming, musical selections, and refreshments.
