The Hartnell College mens soccer team won its season opener against Cosumnes River College on Wednesday, 2-0, after beginning the season ranked #11 in the nation, according to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America/adidas national preseason rankings.
Both goals in the Sacramento game were scored by Juan Alvarez in the opening half. Assists were notched by Eduardo Verduzco and Luis Ibarra. The shut-out was recorded by goalie Alex Amezcua, who made two saves.
The Panthers, under head coach Daniel Ortega, host a tournament starting Friday, where they face off against 13th ranked Fresno City College at 1 p.m. The talent-rich tournament, with five teams ranked in the top 15 nationally, concludes on Sunday.
