College just became more affordable for aspiring and current Hartnell College students from South County, thanks to Chevron North America Exploration and Production Company.
That is because Chevron just announced a gift of $40,000 to support scholarships for students from South County who live in or south of Soledad as far as San Ardo.
The scholarship gift to the Hartnell College Foundation was announced at a reception honoring Hartnell’s new superintendent/president, Dr. Phoebe K. Helm, at San Bernabe Vineyards on Wednesday, September 10, 2008.
Twenty thousand dollars of this scholarship gift for entering and continuing Hartnell College students with demonstrated financial need will be awarded as 20, $1,000 scholarships beginning in the fall of 2010.
The other half will be put into an endowment, which will be matched by the California Community Colleges Scholarship Endowment, established by the Bernard Osher Foundation’s Initiative for California Community College Students. Gifts are matched on a 2:1 basis, bringing the value of the endowed portion of the Chevron gift to $30,000. The goal of the Osher Foundation grant is to create a $100 million endowment to support 5,000 scholarships each year for California Community College students.
“This gift could not have come at a better time for our South County students,” said Dr. Helm. The King City Education Center has just seen an enrollment spike of 45 percent over last fall.
