The Hartnell English Institute at Hartnell College provides intensive language instruction to the campus' international students and other non-English speakers.
Operated year-round, the institute is designed to prepare students to use English effectively in their academic work and everyday life, according to Josephine Crawford, international student advisor and English Institute director.
"Formal language classes," she says, "are presented in a friendly, personal setting which allow students to integrate grammar, vocabulary, reading, writing, speaking, listening comprehension, and research skills in relation to a central theme." Themes include American culture, film and television, and heroes. Classes are held during 8- and 16-week sessions.
"By using a comprehensive approach to learning English, students feel like they are in a regular American classroom situation," explains Crawford.
Field trips are an integral part of the class, according to institute instructor Chris Hart. " By visiting such places as the Monterey Bay Aquarium, the Carmel Mission, or the California Rodeo, students practice their English by speaking and listening to many different American people," she said. Students also practice their English in visits to various locations such as coffee houses and police stations.
The institute is especially valuable to international students who want to improve their Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) scores, according to Hart. Before international students can enroll in American colleges, they must achieve a certain TOEFL score.
Two recent graduates of the English Institute-Duck-Han Youn of South Korea and Sachiko Uchikoshi of Japan-speak highly of the institute. Uchikoshi, a computer information science at Hartnell this fall, says the institute "enhanced my English skills for academic study." Youn, who is taking business classes at Hartnell, found the institute invaluable in improving his English skills. "One of the best parts of the program was the field trips in which we learned much about American history and culture," Youn said.
