The Hartnell College Music Department announces its December calendar of concerts. The four concerts feature the college orchestra, two choirs, the college band with guest artists, and the college jazz ensemble.
The concerts of traditional and modern holiday music and other winter fare will be fun for the entire family. Plan to attend one or all of these concerts:
The Hartnell College Symphony Orchestra will present its Symphonic Holidays concert on Thursday, December 7, at 7:30 p.m. on the Main Stage, showcasing holiday favorites, selections from the works of Bach, Brahms, Handel, Mendelssohn, and Ippolitov-Ivanov, and the world premiere of "Overture, Opus 87b" by local composer Dale E. Victorine. Brahmsí "Academic Festival Orchestra" will feature guest conductor Steve Ettinger, founder of the Monterey County Composersí Forum.
The Winter Choral Celebration will feature the college choir and chamber singers performing a wide variety of music including traditional holiday songs, selections from genres ranging from a 16th century madrigal to a lively modern gospel arrangement, and music from the film Schindlerís List. The choral concert is on Monday, December 11, at 7:30 p.m. on the Main Stage.
The Winter Band Festival will feature the Hartnell College Symphonic Band performing holiday favorites and works by Gustav Holst, Rimsky-Korsakov, Handel, and Palestrina, among others. Special guests for this concert on Tuesday, December 12, at 7:30 p.m. on the Main Stage, are the jazz band and recorder students from the Washington Union School District, directed by Bill Warne.
The Hartnell Jazz Ensemble presents Winter Jazz! on Tuesday, December 19, at 7:30 p.m. in Hartnellís Recital Hall, room 125 of the Performing Arts Facility. The concert will include classic swing, jazz, and rock.
Instrumental groups are directed by Dr. Carl Christensen and the choral groups are directed by Sandy Rudo. No tickets are required for attendance, though donations may be suggested at the door.
