Peer-Led Team Learning (PLTL)

Please Note: This page is still under Construction

Peer-Led Team (PLTL) Learning is currently avaliable to students in Hartnell's CSin3 Program and other CSS courses. There are plans to pilot PLTL in STEM courses, but instructors from other disciplines are welcome to request PLTL Leaders. The pilot will be developed around the “Six Critical Components” used at hundreds of national and international institutions. Their respective characteristic features are as follows:

1. The workshop is integral to the course;

2. Course professors are involved in the selection of workshop materials, training and supervision of peer leaders, and the ongoing evaluation of the workshops;

3. Peer leaders are selected, trained and supervised to be skilled in group work as facilitators;

4.Workshop materials are appropriately challenging and designed for small group work;

5. The workshops are held once a week from 90 to 120 minutes in length, contain six to eight students per group, in a space suitable for small‐ group activities;

6. PLTL is supported by the department and the institution

Peer-Led Team Learning (PLTL) leaders are course-competent students, selected by the instructor, who help guide students to a greater understanding of course content by facilitating weekly out-of-class workshops using worksheets or activities developed, selected, or approved by the instructor; and who work to further develop student learning and study skills. PLTL leaders build their communication skills, increase their subject knowledge and self-confidence, and acquire valuable work experience. PLTL Leaders earn from $11.30 - $14.56 an hour.
