Dr. Edward Valeau; Biography

Dr. Edward Valeau has more than 30 years of experience in education as a teacher, faculty member and administrator in secondary schools. At the community college level, he currently serves as the eighth president of Hartnell Community College. He has a BA degree in English; a Masters Degree in School Administration; and a Doctorate in Administration of Higher Education from the University of California, Berkeley. He is an American Council on Education Fellow. His postdoctoral training includes participation in Harvard's Institute for Education Management certificate program. Recently, he was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to study in India and Pakistan.

Locally he serves on several Boards including: the Chamber of Commerce, Panetta Institute, King City Chamber of Commerce, Common Ground and he serves as a Board of Trustees member for the National Steinbeck Center.

At the state level, he is actively involved with the Community College League of California. He has served as chair and vice chair on the Community College League of California Legislative and Finance Commission which helps to set policy for the 106 California community colleges. He has served as commissioner on ACCA's Management Development Commission and he is an active member of the association. Currently he is the President of Community Colleges for International Education (CCIE), and President of the CEO Technology Institute.

At the national level, he was just recently elected to a four-year term on the AACC Board of Directors. He serves on the American Council on Education Institutional Effectiveness Committee, AACC Commission on Research, and as a member of the Presidents Academy. He is a member of the American Association of Community College President's Academy and Commissioner on the American Association of Community Colleges for Research. His new assignment will allow him to sit on the Government and Policy Commission, and the International Education Committee.

Dr. Valeau has been and continues to be recognized for his leadership and contribution to staff development programs designed to enhance the skills and abilities of managers in California Community Colleges and throughout the country. He is noted for being the chief architect of the Association of California Community College Administrators Mentor Program, which is now in its twelfth year of existence. The program has resulted in mid-level managers, particularly minority and women, achieving positions of presidents and vice-presidents.

Dr. Valeau is recognized as an outstanding leader in several areas including: program innovation, institutional effectiveness, staff development and recently in the area of technology. Under his tenure and in cooperation/support from the Board of Trustees, faculty, administration, students and community, the College has amassed more than $15 million dollars in grants and in federal funding to promote the goals and missions of Hartnell College. It has obtained state-of-the-art technology for teaching, learning and administrative computing. He believes that "Together We Can Make A Difference."
