To use COGNOS you must use Explorer 9 or better. When you are in COGNOS you will need to log in using your Hartnell College Login to be able to use the capacities of COGNOS granted by your login.
Cognos is IBM's business intelligence (BI) and performance management software suite. The software is designed to enable business users without technical knowledge to extract corporate data, analyze it and assemble reports.
Cognos is composed of nearly three dozen software products. Because Cognos is built on open standards, the software products can be used with relational and multidimensional data sources from multiple vendors, including Microsoft, NCR Teradata, SAP and Oracle. It is the intent of the college to use this business intelligence software to develop the research tools to make data driven decisions.
When you enter COGNOS click on EIS and you will be linked to the current reports that are available or click on the links on the left to go directly to each of the current tools available. We are actively working on this site so it will change as the year goes along. Try not to be too frustrated and enjoy the tools that work.
If you just want to use the tools developed in COGNOS then click on the links below and you will be taken directly to the tools housed in COGNOS and will not need to log in.
This tool allows you to track students from one class to another and look at their persistence and success in the next class.
Enrollment & Retention by Discipline
This tool allows you to look at 3, 5 and 10 years of enrollment and retention data for a particular discipline and compare it to the college trends. In the “Additional Filters” field you can also look at how the discipline performed by campus/site, day/evening and modality.
This tool is similar to the previous tool but allows you to look at 3, 5 and 10 years of enrollment and success data for a particular discipline and compare it to the college trends. In the “Additional Filters” field you can also look at how the discipline performed by campus/site, day/evening and modality.
This tool captures all of the students and their ethnicity, based upon IPEDS definitions, who have graduated in the previous year and have registered for class at Hartnell. That means that the Spring numbers include the Fall numbers and should not be added together. This tool identifies how many students have taken the necessary placement tests for a particular course. If the course chosen does not require a placement test then the field will be left blank. Remember also that the first screen is usually the first of many so use the page arrows at the bottom of the page.
