Parking

Hartnell College Parking—Salinas main campus

To meet the needs of our community, Hartnell College built a modern parking structure that opened to the public in January 2006. One of several improvements to the campus that the passage of Measure H allowed, the parking structure is convenient to the new library, the student center, and all of the academic buildings of the campus.

There are two entrances to the parking structure from Central Avenue, west of Homestead. Students, faculty, and the general public are encouraged to use the parking structure when driving to campus.

There also are two parking lots on the Alisal side of the campus, and small parking lots at the entrance to the college from Nacional Street and on Homestead.

Your trip will be made easier and more enjoyable by knowing a few parking rules. First, please park in an appropriately designated spot—don’t park your huge car in a compact space, and pay attention to any painted restrictions. Second, in January 2008, we changed the way you pay for parking in the parking structure so that it is consistent with the way you pay for parking in all the other campus parking lots. Just get a paper permit from one of the machines located on every floor, and display the permit on your dashboard, as instructed. Parking is $2 per day, and most of the machines are payable with quarters only, however there are two electronic machines on the first floor of the parking structure that accept dollar bills. Students may purchase semester passes at a greatly reduced rate. Finally, be sure to follow instructions on the signs you will find in the parking areas.

Below are some additional tips for parking. Click here for the full set of parking regulations applicable to on-campus parking.

HOW TO AVOID PARKING CITATIONS ON CAMPUS – BE INFORMED!

All provisions of the California Vehicle Code are incorporated within the Traffic and Parking Regulations and, therefore, are applicable on college grounds. (this is Section 114  of our regulations).

SOME COMMONLY VIOLATED REGULATIONS

Parking Permit Required -- You must display a current and valid permit that can be clearly seen through the windshield from outside your vehicle, whether that permit is for the day, the semester, or the year. This requirement applies to any motorized vehicle parked on campus. Check guidelines for display information.  (Enforced Monday through Friday - 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.) (This is Section 101)

Faculty and Staff  Parking Spaces -- Parking spaces designated with the word STAFF are Faculty and Staff parking only and require the display of a valid Faculty/Staff parking permit or special temporary permits that are displayed in accordance with Section 101. (Enforced Monday through Friday - 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM unless modified by the Vice President of Business Services) (This is Section 102)

Parking Inside Marked Space and Head-First -- Park your vehicle within the limits of a marked parking stall. In the parking structure this means that you must park between the two inside parallel lines. Use only one stall and park facing into the parking stall. Do not back into your space! Only one vehicle shall park in each parking space. (This is Section 108).

Pay Attention to Painted Curbs -- Painted curbs indicate restricted parking. The color of the painted curb denotes the type of parking restriction (We use California Vehicle Code for this, Section 21458):

a. RED Curb – Never park or stand here! Red indicates no stopping, standing, or parking, whether the vehicle is occupied or unattended.
b. GREEN Curb or spaces – You have 20 minutes only! This is truly for a dash-in, dash-out visit to our campus.
c. YELLOW Curb –This is a loading and unloading zone, with a 15-minute limit.
d. BLUE Curb or spaces – this is for handicapped/disabled parking only; all others will be heavily fined, no excuses! (this is Section 112).

Remember, these are only some of the very reasonable rules we enforce so that we might all enjoy parking here. We hope you enjoy your visit to our beautiful campus.
