About the Hartnell Science and Math Institute

The Science and Math Institute (SMI) began as an outgrowth of a visioning workshop held on the Hartnell Campus in early spring 2008. The workshop was attended by leaders from industry, community, Hartnell and other area schools who engaged in discussions to come up with ways to continue and enhance the positive activities taking place in the science and math programs at the College. Hartnell President/Superintendant Dr. Phoebe Helm was extremely supportive in encouraging people to move forward and as a result, the institute opened its doors last fall with Dr. Jesse Cude at the helm as its first director.

SMI Mission Statement:

The Science and Math Institute of Hartnell College will inspire, encourage, and support the next generation of scientists and engineers. The SMI will provide the kind of environment our students need to succeed as they attend our college and move toward their goal of becoming contributing members of the technological workforce. The Institute will help create this environment by also inspiring, encouraging, and supporting our faculty as they work with their students in and out of the classroom.
