Grant Title:                   Stepping Up – Improving Women and Latino Enrollment and Success in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Programs

Summary of Objectives:

  1. To establish an NSF Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Talent Expansion Program (STEP) by appointing a principal investigator, co-principal investigator and project advisory committee representing the targeted disciplines and programs and by securing partnership agreements with two targeted local high schools with high identified needs.

 

  1. To develop curriculum and other components for a Summer Bridge Program in partnership with two local high schools that will result in participation of 30 students per year by the end of year one of the grant; serving 150 students in total over the grant-funded period.

 

  1. To implement the high school Summer Bridge Program which will result in 90% of participating students demonstrating improvement in their science and math proficiency; and 80% enrolling in a postsecondary education program upon completion of high school.

 

  1. To develop and implement six new science and math supplemental instruction courses at Hartnell College that will target key math and science “gatekeeper” courses and that will result in a 70% pass rate for participating students.

 

  1. To implement expanded science, technology, engineering, and math academic support activities for underrepresented students at Hartnell College that, together with other activities, will result in a 30% increase in STEM majors and a 25% increase in STEM degrees awarded by the end of the grant.

 

  1. To develop and implement a new academic support course, “Women in Science,” with 20 participants in the first year and 100 participants over the grant period.

 

  1. Complete partnership agreements with Cal State University Monterey Bay including new/updated articulation plans and transfer agreements.

 

  1. To finalize and implement a project evaluation plan that will collect formative and summative data on 100% of participating high school and college students, and faculty and that will guide program implementation, dissemination, and institutionalization.
