Many of Hartnell’s incoming English 253 students lack the basic study skills and support necessary for success. It is critical that they receive attention during their first few weeks, without it many will drop out during their first semester. Supplemental Instruction (SI) will provide students with proactive support before the first exam or assignment is due as well as throughout the semester. |

Supplemental Instruction |
|
For Spring of 2008, an SI leader that is selected by the faculty will be hired and trained to work with multiple sections of English 253. The SI sessions will provide students with a more efficient/well managed study time where students can study more effectively in a shorter period of time than when they attempt to study alone. SI also provides the necessary academic and social support, which will be especially beneficial to new first time college students and returning students who have been out of school for a long period of time. The pairing of students with mentors that have like interests, experiences, and goals will allow appropriate learning strategies to be modeled in a collaborative group setting. |

Expected Outcomes |
|
At least 50% of the students in the target courses will attend the SI sessions. The students that attend SI sessions will be compared with the non-attendees in the following areas: GPA and success. Attendees will average at least ½ a grade point higher and be 30% more successful than those that do not attend the SI sessions. |
