January 10, 2007

The Hartnell College Theatre Arts Department is currently enrolling students for SpringFest 2007, its annual series of theatre classes and workshops. Now in its fourth year, SpringFest has evolved into a safe and inviting environment for both students new to theatre and seasoned performers eager to explore and develop their craft.

This year the program is offering two new classes as part of the Black Box program targeting specific performance skills.

The first, entitled Words, Words, Words, focuses on developing the actor’s proficiency speaking challenging dialogue. Using texts from playwrights like Tom Stoppard and David Mamet, actor and director Jeff McGrath will help students develop their speaking skills to deliver the trickiest of dialogue with grace and aplomb.

In addition, students are also welcome to enroll in actor Jeff Heyer’s improvisation class, and learn a variety of essential acting techniques through a series of theatre games and exercises. This class is perfect for any student interesting in learning a little more about theatre in a fun and safe environment that is guaranteed to be full of laughs.

Looking for more than just a class? Try auditioning for The Open Studio Program. Under the direction of resident actor and instructor Jeff Heyer, students will rehearse and perform two one act plays to develop their acting skills and develop a deeper understanding of the rehearsal process. Titles include The Mystery at Twicknam Vicarage by David Ives, and A Stye of the Eye by Christopher Durang.  There are other Open Studio performance opportunities as well – auditions for Open Studio will take place on Saturday, January 27.  Please call 755-6987 for additional information.

For younger students between the ages of 9 and 13, The Hartnell College Performing Arts Department is offering The Young Company Presents: An Actor’s Showcase, directed by Susanne Burns and Melissa Chin Parker.

To register for classes or to find out more information about the program, contact Melissa Chin Parker at 755-6987.
