Academic Learning Center - Math Lab

What's Happening With The Hartnell Math Lab In Spring 2010?

In the Spring 2010 semester, all of the "L series" math classes that are usually offered in the Hartnell College Math Lab will once again be available. However, Math 205 and 206 (the individualized study courses that support the lecture courses in math) will not be available. There are also some important changes to the way the L series courses will be run, so keep reading!

The Classes That Will Be Offered

·      Arithmetic of Whole Numbers:  Math 200L

·      Pre-Algebra, Levels 1, 2, and 3:  Math 201L1, 201L2, and 201L3

·      Elementary Algebra, Levels 1 through 4:  Math 121L1, 121L2, 121L3, and 121L4

·      Intermediate Algebra, Levels 1 through 4:  Math 123L1, 123L2, 123L3, and 123L4

·      Technical Math, Levels 1, 2, and 3:  Math 151L1, 151L2, and 151L3

These aren’t in the printed Spring 2010 schedule, but you can register for them online in PAWS.

Things That Will Be Staying The Same

·      The same math topics will be covered in each course.

·      Same place (ANX 120, the area known as the Math Lab).

·      Same instructor (Jim Riley).

·      You'll still be working individually in a lab-like setting, rather than attending a regular lecture class.

Things That Will Be Different

·      These will be short courses, meeting 4 hours a week for 8 weeks.

·      These courses won't be self-paced. That means you have to attend at a set time, you have to be in the class from the start of the 8-week session, and you have to finish by the end of the 8 weeks. The pace will be slower than in a lecture class, but you still have to keep up!

·      In addition to the 4 hours a week in class, several hours a week of online computer work will be required. You’ll have several options for meeting this online requirement. It's really to your advantage, because otherwise you would have to spend 6 to 9 hours a week in class!

·      Math 205 and 206 will not be available. We're looking for other ways to support students in lecture classes who need help outside of class.

Dates

These classes will run February 1 through March 26.

They will be offered again in a second 8-week session from April 5 through May 25.

Times

Monday through Thursday, one hour a day, starting at 9 AM, 10 AM, 11 AM, or noon.

All 15 of the L series classes listed above are available at each of these times during the session that starts on February 1.

There will not be any noon classes in the session that starts on April 5.
