Academic Learning Center - Math Lab

What Happened to the Hartnell Math Lab?

Starting with the Spring 2010 semester, the Hartnell College Math Lab as we've known it over the last several years no longer exists.

The "L series" math classes that were offered before in the Math Lab (Math 200L, 201L1 through 201L3, 121L1 through 121L4, 123L1 through 123L4, and 151L1 through 151L3) are still available. Those classes are now being offered in a different format, and they are no longer self-paced.

Math 205 and 206 (the individualized study courses that support the lecture courses in math) are not being offered at all.

Keep reading for more information on what's going on with those courses.

The Courses That Are Being Offered

·      Arithmetic of Whole Numbers:  Math 200L

·      Pre-Algebra, Levels 1, 2, and 3:  Math 201L1, 201L2, and 201L3

·      Elementary Algebra, Levels 1 through 4:  Math 121L1, 121L2, 121L3, and 121L4

·      Intermediate Algebra, Levels 1 through 4:  Math 123L1, 123L2, 123L3, and 123L4

·      Technical Math, Levels 1, 2, and 3:  Math 151L1, 151L2, and 151L3

These aren’t in the printed Spring 2010 schedule, but you can find them online in PAWS. You can register for them online, by phone, or in person at the Admissions and Records office.

Things That Are Staying The Same About These Courses

·      Each course will cover the same math topics as they did when they were offered in the Math Lab.

·      Same instructor (Jim Riley).

·      Students will still work individually in a lab-like setting, rather than attending a regular lecture class.

Things That Are Different About These Courses

·      These are short courses, meeting 4 hours a week for 8 weeks.

·      These courses are not self-paced. That means you have to attend at a set time, you have to be in the class from the start of the 8-week session, and you have to finish by the end of the 8 weeks. The pace is slower than in a regular lecture class, but you still have to keep up!

·      In addition to the 4 hours a week in class, you have to do several hours a week of online computer work. This is really to your advantage, because otherwise you would have to spend 6 to 9 hours a week in class!

·      The courses meet in the area that was formerly the Tutorial Center. The Tutorial Center has moved across the aisle into the area that was formerly the Reading and Writing Lab.

·      Math 205 and 206 will not be available. Help is still available in the Tutorial Center, and we're looking for other ways to support students in lecture classes who need help outside of class.

Dates

These classes are currently running February 1 through March 26.

They are being offered again in a second 8-week session from April 5 through the end of the semester.

Times

The sections that start on April 5, 2010 will meet Monday through Thursday, one hour a day, starting at 9 AM, 10 AM, or 11 AM.

All 15 of the L series classes listed above are available at each of those times.
