Etudes Logo Etudes is the learning/content management system for Hartnell College. If your class is in the course catalog you already have a shell, you do not have to request one. If you would like to request a project shell, you can do so here.

Log-In Directions
To log-in to your courses go to https://myetudes.org/portal with:

user id: (your Hartnell Employee ID #) -- this is located on your paystub if you do not know what it is
password: (refer to Etudes emails) -- Can't find an email?  Contact Megan (mblevins@hartnell.edu)

Need to reset your Etudes password?
Use your email to reset your password here. Or use this form to reset your account if your email is not being recognized.  No one at Hartnell College can reset your password, you must have it reset through Etudes.

Publishing Your Class
Your students will not see your class in their Etudes account until you PUBLISH it!! Go to "Site Info" then "Manage Access" to publish your course.

DE Teachers are required to have Etudes 101 training prior to teaching any class at a distance
This class is offered through Etudes, not Hartnell. There is a fee associated with the course, which may or may not be reimbursable through your Dean. You will want to contact them for more information. Find more information on signing up for this class here.

The MERLOT Journal of Online Learning and Teaching (JOLT) is a peer-reviewed, open-access, online publication that aims to promote scholarship in the use of the Internet and web-based multimedia resources in higher education.

Open Educational Resources

Intended to assist faculty with the selection and adoption of affordable materials for students. Follow this link to find compliations of open educational resources (OERs) which are free online.

Teaching face to face and teaching online require different approaches.  If you are teaching your class the same way you would if it were face to face, you need to consider making some changes to be most effective. Change 1: Increase Course Interactivity -- Infuse your presence into your course

In distance education the level of course interactivity needs to be MORE than it is in the face to face classroom. Consider these resources to help you.

  • The eLearning Guild guide to increasing course interactivity
  • Create a Welcome Video
  • Consider Using Google Hangouts or Google Hang-outs On Air
  • Use screencasts and videos

Change 2: Leave no doubts about Communication

Discussion forums, annoucements, and email messages are the main ways you will communicate with your students. Try recording your introductory information in a presentation (contact Megan Blevins, Instructional Technologist, for help!) and doing something similar with your lectures or key points of material. Online students often feel isolated - they need to know you are there to help them every step of the way.

  • Are you nervous about or need a little help in the discussion forum area?  Try this advice.
  • Provide constant feedback -- respond to questions within 24 hours and give feedback on assignments and assessments within a week

Syllabus - Another Communication Device

Your syllabus is the guide for your students throughout the course, give them something they can use to plan.  Make it a "block" in Etudes.  This will force them to at least scroll all the way thorugh it and click that they have read it in order to access the rest of your course.  Tips on creating or uploading your syllabus are here, the directions to make it a block are here.  

Building your own Orientation Program

Your orientation should happen right away at the start of class (do you want to make it a presentation they can watch? Contact Megan Blevins or Laura Lark, Instructional Technologists for help).  Make it your first assignment!  It should include the following things.

  • Introduction to the course (what is it exactly that's going to happen? What the overall goal?)

  • Teacher expectations of students

    • This can live in your syllabus, but students need to be told exactly what you expect from them and when you expect it. Everything from when they should read, to where to go for assignments, to how to address you (Dr? Professor? Mr/Mrs? Hey teacher?)

  • Make them show familiarity with Etudes.
    • Take an orientation quiz.
    • Go through the Etudes Student Tutorial
    • Post an introduction of themselves in the discussion forum (this also builds community!) Encourage posting an avatar (scroll to bottom)!
