Distinguished Astronomer to Speak at Hartnell College

Chris Impey, respected professor of astronomy and researcher at the University of Arizona, will speak at Hartnell College on Thursday, March 10.

His talk, titled "The Art of Science," will begin at noon in the collegeís planetarium. The event, sponsored by the Hartnell College Foundation and First National Bank of Central California, is free and open to the public.

A member of the University of Arizona faculty since 1986, Impey also is involved with the campus' Steward Observatory.

Considered an inventive teacher, he has won the National Science Foundationís highest honor for excellence in both teaching and research.

He has been published in more than 100 publications and is a founding member of the board of directors of the Astronomy Educational Journal of the American Astronomical Society. Impey also has co-authored two textbooks on astronomy and has contributed 15 sections to the book, "Great Ideas for Teaching Astronomy." In addition, he has had 14 projects approved for observations with the Hubble Space Telescope.
