Two concerts highlighting music from the movies and compositions by one of America's most beloved composers will be presented at Hartnell College in December.
Both programs are free and open the public. The concerts will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the main theater in the Performing Arts Facility.
On Tuesday, Dec. 6, the program by Hartnell's Community Band, Carl Christensen director, is titled "Music from the Movies." The selections will include special arrangements from hit movies ranging from "Exodus" and "Titanic" to "The Lion King" and "E.T." Other movies to be featured include "Aladdin," "Beauty and the Beast," "Raiders of the Lost Ark," and "The Little Mermaid." The concert will also feature the San Benancio Middle School Jazz Band as guest performers.
On Thursday, Dec. 8, the college's Community Orchestra, also directed by Carl Christensen, will present "Salute to Leroy Anderson," one of America's most renowned composers. His masterpiece, "Sleigh Ride," with its unforgettable sleigh bells, whip cracks and other sound effects, is one of holiday season's enduring favorites. Other works to be performed will include "The Syncopated Clock," "Blue Tango," "The Typewriter," "Christmas Festival," and " Trumpeter's Lullaby." Clips from the movie of Anderson's life, "Once Upon a Sleigh Ride," will be projected during the concert.
